Summary

Established in 1990, it has operated from Copenhagen since 1994, supporting European policymaking by collaborating with the European Commission, European Parliament, and the Council of the European Union.

EEA’s Work on Textiles

Since 2019, the EEA has published numerous reports on textiles. The 2025 briefing reports record-high EU textile consumption—19 kg per person annually—while waste reaches 16 kg per person. Textiles contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, excessive raw material use, water and land consumption, chemical pollution, and microplastic release. EEA argues that a systemic shift is essential, focusing on durability, reuse, repair, and recycling. The EEA’s Circular Metrics Lab will track progress through its new textiles monitoring module.
