Human activities in the ocean is unlimited, yet the self-healing ability of the marine ecosystem is limited. InResST is a low-carbon , environmentally friendly company that focuses on the feasibility research, development, production and promotion of ocean plastics used in textiles.

InResST recycled nylon staple fiber products are mainly derived from ghost fishing nets, generated by deep-sea fishery activities, recycling by a mechanical way which are then produced by a zero-carbon factory. Its performance is very similar to virgin nylon and can be directly applied to all types of yarns and fabrics. Our mission is to reduce carbon emissions, reduce dependence on oil, protect marine life, protect the marine environment, and clean up microplastic pollution in the ocean. (THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY LENZING– ONE OF THE SOLUTION PROVIDERS FEATURED IN GLOBAL FASHION AGENDA’S INNOVATION FORUM)

Lenzing, a leading global supplier of wood-based specialty fibers, and Södra, a world-class producer of pulp, signed a cooperation agreement with the clear objective of making a decisive contribution to addressing the enormous textile waste challenges of the industry and the society. The cooperation involves the transfer of knowledge between the two companies, which have been proactively driving the circular economy issue for many years, and a joint process development followed by a capacity expansion for pulp from post-consumer waste. The goal is to process 25,000 tons of textile waste per year by 2025.

The fashion industry is one of the major polluting industries in the world. Millions of tons of textile waste are created each and every year, most of it ends up in landfills. In the spirit of the circular economy transition, both Lenzing and Södra have independently addressed the issue and developed appropriate solution options so far. Both companies are experts in their respective fields with many years of large-scale industrial experience.

Together, they give textile recycling a huge boost by developing technologies further towards a broader, industrial-scale use of post-consumer cellulosic waste. The jointly developed pulp OnceMore® will subsequently also be used as a raw material for the production of Lenzing’s TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ branded specialty fibers.

“The cooperation with Södra is a major milestone towards achieving our ambitious climate and sustainability goals. We are proud to be able to go this way with a competent partner. One company alone cannot solve the pressing issue of textile waste. It is proactive partnerships like this that enable us to move forward and bring about real systemic change”, says Christian Skilich, Member of the Managing Board of Lenzing.

“With OnceMore® pulp, Södra has created a globally unique solution to base textile on a recycled source. By joining forces with Lenzing, we now taking the next step on our journey and will bring world-class recycling to the textile value chain. Through a new investment, we will also ten-fold our production capacity of OnceMore® pulp during 2022 and have a higher level of recycled textile content. These are important steps towards our long-term target to create a circular textile industry”, says Lotta Lyrå, President and CEO of Södra.

“In this turn around decade for our planet, making forest-based fabrics from recycled textiles is critical to protect biodiversity, alleviate pressure on forests and address the growing climate crisis. Canopy is excited to see these two major producers join forces to bring vital Next Generation Solutions to the fashion industry. We look forward to seeing greater commercial volumes come to market”, says Nicole Rycroft, Canopy’s Founder and Executive Director.

Two companies with bold visions and large-scale solutions for the reuse of waste

In line with its circular economy vision, “We give waste a new life. Every day”, Lenzing drives the industry towards a fully-fledged circular economy by striving to give waste a new life in all aspects of its core business and by codeveloping circular solutions with potential partners in and outside the current value chain. Lenzing has extensive knowledge in developing cutting-edge innovations in recycling such as its REFIBRA™ and Eco Cycle technologies. Besides virgin dissolving wood pulp, these technologies allow the processing of a substantial proportion of recycled materials based on pre-consumer cottons scraps and post-consumer garments.

OnceMore® by Södra is the world’s first process for industrial-scale recycling of textile waste of blended fibers, and it’s the forest who makes that possible. The process combines wood cellulose with textile waste to create a pure, high-quality dissolving pulp which can be used to produce new clothing and other textile products. During 2022, a new investment will ten-fold the production capacity of OnceMore® pulp and reach a higher level of recycled textile content. The goal for 2025 is to process 25,000 tons of textile and offer a OnceMore® pulp based on our wood material and 50 percent recycled textile material.

Summary

As an innovation leader, Lenzing is a partner of global textile and nonwoven manufacturers and drives many new technological developments.

TENCEL™ is the flagship brand under Lenzing that covers textile specialty fiber offerings. Since 1992, TENCEL™ has been driving the evolution of fiber solutions for the apparel and home textile segments through several industry-first innovations and environmentally responsible production processes.

TENCEL™ fibers are made from wood that is sourced from sustainably managed forests and produced with low environmental impact and high resource efficiency. Composed of a natural material, TENCEL™ fibers are 100% biodegradable and compostable and can fully revert back to nature. Besides botanic origin and biodegradable quality, TENCEL™ branded lyocell and modal fibers feature many benefits like gentle on skin, smoothness, long-lasting softness, breathability, etc.

Changing the current practices of manufacturing and consumption is one of the ways in which society can thrive in a sustainable way. In the apparel industry, this vision is manifested in “circular fashion,” which we see more often every day.

YKK has been pioneering the adoption of more sustainable manufacturing practices, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing our use of sustainable materials, reducing our water usage, better managing our wastewater, and eliminating the use of harmful chemicals to support the transition to a more sustainable fashion industry. We are also investing in technologies that make use of connectivity and promoting industry collaboration. The latest partnership between YKK, sportswear brand Houdini and EON Group Holdings resulted in the creation of the NFC-enabled TouchLink™ zipper puller. There are many potential uses for TouchLink™, ranging from the acquisition of information on material composition and use and care of the garment to the development of a closer relationship between the user and the brand through enhanced consumer experiences.

In general, brands only have oversight of their products up to the point of sale. Once a garment is in the customer’s hands, brands usually lose track of it and have little power to unlock the full potential of the garment as a product. TouchLink™ enables brands to maintain a closer relationship with the customer and support new business models such as resale, rental, subscription, and recycling.

YKK’s TouchLink™ zipper puller is featured in Houdini’s digitized One Parka. Thanks to the product cloud platform created by EON, Houdini’s One Parka can be connected, managed, and stewarded across the product lifecycle. In turn, customers can touch their mobile phones to the TouchLink™ zipper puller on their Houdini One Parka to instantly connect to Houdini. This will give access to curated use- and care-guides, service, and support as well as provide opportunities to explore and co-create circular ways of life.

Houdini’s initiative demonstrates the crucial role of connected products in solving fashion’s biggest barriers to circular business model transformation – creating a measurable platform for increases in customer lifetime value and in revenue generated per item through digitization. Houdini, EON, and YKK are together committing to sharing the processes and toolkit with the apparel industry in the hope of encouraging more brands to digitize products and create scalable systems for circular commerce.

The decisions and actions we take have the power to outstandingly recalibrate our world for the better. What could be more exciting than that? We at Sense – immaterial Reality dare you to be forward-thinking!

When we’re deeply plunged into difficulty it’s tempting to suppress innovation. Yet, whether we choose to see it or not, we’re at a pivotal moment of enormous potential. Why passively accept the cold leftovers of outmoded ideas when we can open the door to entirely new experiences?

Business model innovation refers to the development of novel concepts and to the evolution of individual business models and prevalent systems in the fashion industry alike.

We believe that nowadays fashion should not create unnecessary material waste and pollution. Imagination, or rather immateriality, is all that is needed at all stages of the product life cycle. That’s why we keep asking: “Why choose imagination if you can have immaterial?”

The role of governments and international institutions in supporting technological innovation should not be underestimated: institutions in many countries are playing a critical role in driving positive change at the state level. Nevertheless, fashion brands are urged to not await such policies being put in place but to bring sustainable and effective digital measures now. It will set the industry on a greener track for the years to come, will allow a fashion future to be smarter, more flexible, and better placed to manage uncertainty.

The pandemic shed light on the global supply pipeline and, due to lockdowns, online sales spiked to the equivalent of six years of growth in only eight months, incentivizing the industry to foster innovative solutions and champion current best practices. Some companies in the luxury segment have already recorded in 2021 quarterly results higher than the same period in 2019.

Immaterial Reality is defined as the evolution of the “traditional” Augmented Reality and as the perfect fusion between Physical and Digital Reality. We inside Sense – immaterial Reality are constantly looking for new solutions able to simplify and exploit emerging technologies to favour the production and sales processes of companies. Immaterial Reality permits you to create new experiences, new workflow, and new mental approaches. Now together with the customer, you can imagine and design new processes with a touch of magic.

Digitalization concerns the incorporation of digital technologies into business practices to enable heightened traceability and real-time understanding of processes in the value chain. In the past year, the industry’s digital transformation was accelerated due to COVID-19 with e.g., the increased use of digital showrooms and samples. 1

As we all step blinking into fragile new realities it’s tempting to imagine that Immaterial Reality and the 3D universe is a momentary stop-gap in the lockdown journey. For brands that want to participate in true digital transformation that leads to strategic change and builds long-term resilience, it’s time to engage with a sector that will take fashion, and our surrounding culture and society, out of this century and into the next one.
