Summary

Balena is on a mission to create a circular model for consumer goods products and solve one of the fashion industry’s biggest challenges: the products’ end of life.
Balena is looking to ensure the sustainable consumption and production of materials used in the fashion industry.
Millions of garments are being dumped into landfills or being burnt every year, polluting the earth and the oceans with dangerous microplastics that will not biodegrade for hundreds of years. With no holistic end-of-life solution in sight, leading global fashion brands are racing to find new sustainable solutions to handle their products’ end of life.
Balena’s answer to this burning topic is the BioCir™ material, the company’s first developed material. BioCir™ is a flexible and fully compostable thermoplastic material, reducing toxic, fossil fuel-based materials used in the fashion and footwear industries.

Summary

We address three key challenges of today’s fashion industry: the need for transparent supply chains, the ability to prove product origin and to support sustainability claims. Our DNA marker creates a unique fingerprint to identify a brand, a supplier or even production lot. Our data is highly reliable, because each marker is unique and the info about the origin and journey is safely embedded into the product all time.
The marker is solved in liquid and then sprayed onto the textile product. The application can easily be integrated into existing automated production processes. The read out can be done with the final or any intermediate product with a simple test. The DNA marker is harmless for humans and the environment, GMO-free, vegan, GOTS and OekoTex 100 compliant, yet strong enough to withstand all industrial processing.
